I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2024 MLA Conference in Rochester, MN. It was an awesome experience. I work in a public library and so this conference gave me the opportunity to learn more about public libraries and school libraries.

I had the opportunity to attend a session called “Creating Engaging Multimedia Exhibits” and learned more about our MN Law Library and other information pertaining to Minnesota. They discussed an interesting exhibit that they created at the MN Law Library regarding the 175th Anniversary of the MN Territory, MN Supreme Court that can be borrowed by other libraries in the state. And they showed us some of the tools and other resources that they used to create these exhibits.

One of my favorite sessions to attend was “Exploring Libraries Across the Lincoln Highway”. This was a librarian who took a vacation along the Lincoln Highway to visit libraries and brought back ideas on what other libraries are doing to bring in patrons. My favorite though was Dave’s Drive-in Library that sold Used books from the libraries friends group as well as other items. I think we all need a drive-in bookstore. This was an entertaining and fun session as well as a learning experience. I didn’t even know the Lincoln Highway existed so that was an interesting part of our history to learn.

Another favorite session was “How to Sustain a Health & Fitness Literacy Program in Your Library.” With an aging population and many with health issues, especially in rural areas like ours, I found this helpful. It gave me ideas to bring back to the team to help patrons find health information within our library system. Also possibly think about starting a fitness or walking program through the library. So many wonderful ideas to bring and share and possibly implement in our own library.

Thank you, Prairielands for allowing me this opportunity. I learned so much and I’m excited that we have this program available to us.

Thank you.
