The 2019 MLA Conference themed “Libraries: Stronger Together” is similar to the Glencoe Public Library’s 2019/2020 goal “community and library @ Glencoe, Minnesota.” I attended many sessions which emphasized connecting, outreach, and collaboration with the community. The session “Engagement: Outreach Librarianship,” provided information on planning an outreach program. Katherine Chew of the University of Minnesota explained what is needed in outreach but no ideas were actually shared.

“Expand Your Collection to the Stars” describing how the Buffalo Library received funding, purchases and implemented telescopes into their materials and programs. Telescopes which patrons can check out and use while learning about astronomy first hand is an extension of materials which promote STEM education. The session leaders offered to help any library get started and share information. I can envision the Glencoe library having a couple of telescopes offered to patrons to check out, take home, and use.

Thank you Prairielands! I appreciate the opportunities you gave me to learn, share and experience so that I can increase the library services and expand the outreach to the Glencoe community.
