I am thankful for the opportunity to have attended the Human Resources Crash Course for Library Directors presented by Kate Hall and Kathy Parker. The course was held virtually on May 15, May 22 and June 5, 2023. Kate and Kathy have co-authored the invaluable book “The Public Library Director’s Toolkit” where much of the course knowledge is documented. The course covered everything from job descriptions, compensation packages, policies, writing job ads, onboarding evaluations, discipline, offboarding and succession planning. Much focus was given to the job descriptions and how much of everything in the human resources area falls back on to the job descriptions. One area I took away that needs improvement within my library system is the task of onboarding and steps I can take as a director to make that process better and beneficial.
