With this class, not only am I gaining basic communication skills in American Sign Language, but I’m also getting a better understanding of the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Yes, I’ve learned some basic signs to try and communicate the immediate needs of patrons, but I’ve also learned communication etiquette so as not to completely disrespect any patron that comes into the library who needs assistance. Already, I’ve been able to talk with a deaf patron and make a connection with him, so I’m finding incredible value in this course. While I may have forgotten most signs in that interaction, he appreciated my willingness to try and learn. I can’t wait to continue this education and hopefully one day become somewhat fluent in American Sign Language.
